Mêda

Mêda is a city in the District of Guarda district, in the province of Beira Alta, centr region and sub-region of Beiras and Serra da Estrela, headquarters of a municipality with about 4,630 inhabitants, subdivided into 11 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north and northeast by Vila Nova de Foz Côa, to the southeast by Pinhel, to the south by Trancoso and to the west by Penedono. in a transition zone between the natural regions of the Alto Douro and the Beirão Plateau.

With a vast history, attested by archaeological remains and a territory rich in castles and ruins, Mêda is also rich in built heritage consisting of emblazoned houses, pelourinhos, frigates and fountains. Its valleys and terraces populated by vineyards, olive groves and almond trees are a natural heritage of reference to visit.

The people of Mêda are given to work, but also to parties and pilgrimages. They maintain tradition through craftsmanship, which translates into utensils from wicker, wool, linen, clay or metal.

In gastronomy, the beirãos and durienses flavors predominate, with recipes of corns, cavacas of tijela, pofa raw, sweet porridges and knee donut.

Road access to Mêda is possible through Coimbra, Guarda, Lisbon, Porto or Salamanca.
