Towards Sustainability - DesirMed Project Leads the Fight Against Climate Change

The Municipality of Fundão embarks on an ambitious climate change-resilient transformation project in the Mediterranean, joining the DesirMed consortium. This project has as its central objective the development of nature-based solutions to address the region's climate challenges.

DesirMed is a comprehensive and crucial initiative focused on climate change adaptation in the Mediterranean. With an expected duration of 60 months, it brings together a diverse team of experts in various fields, from biology, climatology and economics to farmers, public entities and companies. The aim is to develop innovative strategies and promote resilience by prioritising natural solutions.

This project, which started in January 2024, has the participation of the School of Agriculture of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (ESA IPCB) and CIMBSE - Intermunicipal Community of Beiras and Serra da Estrela. With a total budget of €1.5 million and an implementation period of five years, it is funded by the Horizon EU programme, with 32 partners from European countries.

Pedro Neto, Councillor of the Municipality of Fundão, highlights the central areas of the project, including ecosystem recovery, water management, critical infrastructures and digital solutions. Paulo Fernandez, Director of ESA IPCB, mentions the application of agroforestry methodologies, predicting a significant impact on the region.

António Miraldes, Executive Secretary of CIMBSE, emphasizes the search for innovative solutions to strengthen the region, reducing the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of extreme weather events.


The DesirMed project is a pledge of collective action to address climate challenges by providing innovative and practical solutions for the Mediterranean region. With the participation of various entities and experts, it represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and resilient future to climate change.
