Aguiar da Beira

The Municipality of Aguiar da Beira is, for those who do not know this little paradise, a pleasant place where contact with the natural environment is privileged. The stillness of its surroundings invites all visitors to share the wonders of water and nature, without forgetting the contact with the culture and traditions of the people who inhabit it.

Municipality of Beira Interior, is 40 km from Viseu and 70 km from Guarda, its district capital. It consists of 10 parishes (three of them unions of parishes), covering an area of 203.68 Km², with a total population of 5,521 inhabitants (Census 2011).

The important human occupations dating back to prehistoric times have left a legacy built that allows a journey through the historical evolution of the way of living and the culture of a people. Part of this painting is the Dolmen of The Neolithic Carapito (national monument); sarcophagi and anthropomorphic graves; the castros, chalcolithic clusters, as are the cases of the Castro de São Pedro dos Matos, Castro de Carapito and Castro das Abelhas.

The pillorinhos, symbols of power, are always elements of historical interest, existing in the municipality three: carapito, Pena Verde and Aguiar da Beira, the latter inserted in the monumental trilogy of the village, consisting of Pelourinho, Clock Tower and Fountain Ameada, all considered national monuments.

There are also several churches and chapels that, due to their beauty or originality, deserve to be visited and known, such as the Chapel of the Lady of the Greens in Forninhos or the Chapel of the Lord of Castelinho in Ancinho in Eirado.

Predominantly rural, it is in agriculture and complementary activities that most households find their livelihood, and these are the fastest growing economic activities in recent years.

The cheese of the mountains, the apple of the highlands, the chestnut and the potato are the crops with the greatest tradition, and predominate in the gastronomic fairs and restaurants of the region. particularly in aviaries, pigsty and cow shops.

In the economic aspect, it is also worth noting the existence of some manufacturing industries, in particular those relating to dairy products and timber, which, alongside diversified and rapidly developing trade, contributes to people being settled in this region of the interior.

Very relevant also in the academic economy are the investments made and projected for the third sector, resulting in the provision of numerous services in the area of social support, mainly by private institutions of social solidarity and equated, which are directed mainly to the elderly population.

Given the unique potential, the tourism sector can bring more wealth and quality of life to the municipality, highlighting the offer of diversified local accommodation and the quality of gastronomy and restaurants, based on the valorization of endogenous products, as is the case of yellow minecity, as well as the emergence of another tourist product,  which privileges contact with nature, the sport of Guidance, sought by hundreds of professional athletes from all over the world.
You can also live the potential of nature in its pure state and know the history of the municipality through the tourist routes  that allow you to enjoy relaxed moments as a family.

In turn, the existing, enhanced terem resources, in a future that we hope to close, through the Tourist Complex of Caldas da Cavaca, promise to constitute an important tourist development center, in the areas of leisure, health and well-being, with impact for the region.

The entire municipality of Aguiar da Beira is covered by a public transport network. This reality is due to a strategy developed by the municipality with the company União de Sátão, to which the transport services of the public career are granted.

Currently, the circuits and schedules of public careers comply with the rules established for school transport, except in periods of school breaks.

The municipality, in conjunction with the Intermunicipal Community Viseu Dão Lafões, has developed an Intermunicipal Transport Plan that aims to structure transport networks at the regional level, define alternative offers to traditional ones and, above all, ensure the framework for the selection of transport operators within the framework of new skills in this area that have been assigned to the municipality and the intercity community.

A region that, more than visiting, is necessary to know and experience.
