Alenquer


The municipality of Alenquer is located on the border between Ribatejo and Extremadura and is part of the district of Lisbon. It has an area of 304.22 km² where about 44,442 inhabitants live, according to 2021 census data.

The orographic structure of this municipality is dominated by mountains and hills, and the Serra de Montejunto is the most outstanding in its natural landscape.


Alenquer
An area of enormous paleontological relevance, animal traces of the Jurassic period (135-165 million years) were found in Alenquer, of gigantic proportions (reaching 35 tons in weight, 22 meters long and 6 meters high), whichwas named Apatosaurus Alenquerensis.

There are also several archaeological testimonies of the human presence in the territory since the prehistoric period. In the Municipal Museum Hipólito Cabaço you can know the history of the municipality and its occupation and evolution throughout the different historical periods.

The foundation of the castle of Alenquer will have been given with the entry of the Visigoths into Portuguese territory, or later.
Within the walls, in Arab times, the mosque would rise in the same place where later the church of Santo Estevão, the village's headquarters, where the Municipal Museum is installed. 
At the time of regeneration, Alenquer gains industrial importance with the construction of roads, railways, factories, but also with the opulence of some residential farms of the triumphant bourgeoisie.

Fruit of its rich historical past, the municipality has a tourism that is mainly archaeological. But as a consequence of these roots, the traditions that prevail here, especially religious ones, are also strong. Therefore, religious tourism also plays a central role in the municipality of Alenquer.

Currently, the municipality of Alenquer can be seen, in general traits, as a space in the process of expansion, especially urbanistically. The evolution has been conditioned by the territorial positioning of the municipality in relation to the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon. The geographical proximity and the growing allocation of transport infrastructure has given Alenquer a significant competitive advantage with an effect on creating important development dynamics.

At the economic level, agriculture (in particular the production of vines, cereals and livestock farming), livestock (poultry and rabbit farming) and siviculture (exploitation of forests and forests) are seen as main sources of income for the populations. At secondary sector level, extractive, manufacturing and construction are highlighted, and finally, in the tertiary sector, small trade predominates, with the exception of the outlet factory initiative. Also transport and logistics companies (road freight transport) is highlighted in this council. 

In terms of transport, the municipality has road and rail infrastructure channels, as well as easy access to motorways. You can find all kinds of services within the municipality.

Assuming itself as a "Municipality Educator", it provides the students of the municipality innovative programs in the field of school sports, entrepreneurship, new technologies and education for citizenship, as well as programs of leisure occupation in the school interruptions of Easter, Summer and Christmas, with activities for all tastes and age groups.

The policies developed in favor of families and the oldest community of the county, have been recognized with several distinctions that make this county an attraction in the country to live.
