Castelo Branco

It is not clear the history of the foundation of Castelo Branco, but it is known that the region is already inhabited since the Paleolithic - as evidenced by the archaeological excavations carried out in the Castle area, which revealed artifacts dating from prehistory.

From the first half of the thirteenth century, the village seems to have quickly acquired importance, as it has been chosen for the realization of several chapters of the Order of the Temple. With the extinction of the Templars and the passage of their goods to the Order of Christ, a commendation of that same Order was established in Castelo Branco, with the residence of commanders and jurisdiction in other commanders.

In a White Castle in whose life, until then, was unfolding intramural, there is a considerable development, followed over the centuries by consistent population growth. This increase in population is mainly due to the fixation of Sephardic Jews fleeing Spain, expelled by the Catholic Kings. The commercial activity of the Jewish commune consolidates an economic base that will allow, even after the decree of expulsion of Jews from the country, a large volume of construction.

Castelo branco is a city of cultural and artisanal wealth, with emphasis on the regional ex-libris - the embroidery of Castelo Branco. Festivals, routes and exhibitions are a constant you should enjoy.

Also the architectural heritage is worth noting and visit. There are several monuments, museums and gardens that you can know and where you can enjoy your time within the county.
