Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo


Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo is a village in the Guarda district, with about 5,148 inhabitants, according to the 2021 census. 
It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta, to the east by Spain, to the south by Almeida, to the southwest and west by Pinhel and to the northwest by Vila Nova de Foz Côa. It is located in Terras de Riba-Côa, which has vast landscapes, plateaus and castles, next to the Côa valley and the Serra da Marofa.

The municipality is served with excellent accessibility, and trained with modern cultural and sports infrastructures. It holds the only protected Nature Reserve in the country - the Faia Brava Reserve.

Its monumentality is present throughout the village. As you walk through its streets, be sure to visit the Cristóvão de Moura Palace, the 16th century pillory, the Mother Church, the medieval cistern and the remains that attest to the presence of an important community of New Christians.
 
The municipality also has an interesting natural beauty with its almond trees in bloom, appear in all its splendor in spring and especially in Barca d'Alva. In summer, the landscape is dominated by orange.

In festive seasons such as Christmas or Easter, let yourself be carried away by the traditional Lamb of Marofa, baked in the oven, on the grill or in stew, a dish that is a mandatory presence at the Figueirenses table for these occasions.

The municipality is rich in traditions, fairs and festivities that are worth celebrating and accompanying, especially if you are visiting the region on these occasions.
