Guarda


Guarda is the Portuguese city with the highest altitude: about 1056 meters. With about 40,117 inhabitants, according to the 2021 census, it is the capital of the Guarda district, and is located in the region of downtown and sub-region of Beiras and Serra da Estrela.

Heir to a rich and unique cultural heritage, it encloses in its walls more than 800 years of history and holds one of the best preserved built heritage sits in the whole country.  over the centuries, they have defended the Portuguese border. The Cathedral, ex-libris of the city, has constructive and aesthetic qualities that place it as one of the greatest monuments in the history of Portuguese architecture.

The crafts of the region is composed of the famous blanket of papa de Maçainhas, the basketry of Gonçalo or the cutlery of Verdugal. In gastronomy let yourself be delighted with the morcela da Guarda and many other sausages typical of this region, the chestnuts and cheese of the Serra, but also with the bucho with grelos, lamb, hare rice or boar with beans.
