Mação

Mação is a municipality of the district of Santarém rich in paleontological and archaeological testimonies. Located in the center of the country, at the apex of three regions - Beira Baixa, Ribatejo and Alentejo -, it is constituted by six parishes, and has a forest spot of great wealth, spread by mountains scattered throughout the territory, as well as a privileged hydrographic network, that give it a unique natural splendor.

Here you can find extensive forests, as well as vast areas of pine forest. The most important mountains of this municipality are bando dos Santos and Bando de Codes, in the center of the county, of which the other mountains that constitute the municipality are observed: the mountains of Santo António, Amêndoa, Galega and Águas Quentes, to the north, and the alfeijoeira mountains, casal and moledo, to the south, and that give it a beautiful and grand landscape, where springs and streams abound. The dams distributed throughout the territory, as well as the various springs and the Tagus River, provide a series of river beaches and bathing areas, much appreciated by tourists and inhabitants of the region.

At the economic level, there has been a sharp decrease in the population of the primary sctor over the last decade, replaced by the secondary and tertiary sectors. However, in some villages life revolves around traditional activities such as agriculture and livestock. They are industries such as sausages and meat processing that play a major role in the economy of the municipality, to which the production of sweet peppers is added, whose quality is appreciated and recognized at the national level. They are also joined by the industry of production of candles and articles in wax, as well as sawmill and wood, which have seen some development. The chamber, to support the economic development of the region, offers good conditions to companies that in the county want to settle. The social economy also has a great highlight, and there are currently 11 Private Institutions of Social Solidarity, which support people of all age groups, this area being one of the most employment offers.
