Manteigas

Manteigas is a village in the District of Guarda, Central Region and sub-region of Beira Interior Norte. The urban area of the village includes two parishes: Santa Maria and São Pedro. Besides these, the municipality is composed by two more parishes: Sameiro and Vale de Amoreira.  The municipality of Manteigas is limited to the northwest by Gouveia, to the east by Guarda, to the southeast by Covilhã and to the west by Seia. The village of Manteigas is located in the Zêzere Glacier Valley, which with its perfect "U" shape is one of the best examples of the landscape modelling by glaciers. The area is also frequently covered with snow in winter.By itself, constitutes a privileged area given the natural, ecological and landscape conditions that dazzle the naturals and visitors.

Manteigas presents, under the morphological point of view, three distinct units which comprise the plateau area, the Zêzere River Valley and the schistose areas of the northeast. Most of the municipality territory is occupied by woods and uncultivated land and, in forest areas, the maritime pine, the chestnut tree and the pseudotesuga predominate.

In what concerns to services and infrastructures, Manteigas is endowed with social action, sports, educational, health, tourism, culture and leisure equipments.
In Manteigas, take the opportunity to enjoy moments of leisure and well-being in the Thermal Spa, or enjoy the nature that surrounds the village through mountain bike rides, or the practice of extreme outdoor sports.

Along with the natural landscape, the pure air, the crystal clear waters and the built heritage, the gastronomy of Manteigas invites you to sit at the table to taste the flavours of the mountains and the land, started as a tasting of sausages and cheeses.

Next, try the caldudo, a dried chestnut broth, or the pumpkin soup. For the main course, enjoy the locally produced trout, farium or rainbow, which can be cooked in the most different ways, depending on the taste and daring of the palate; the bean stew with pork meat takes on a special relevance, as it is a product rooted in local agriculture. Other highlights are the cozido à serrana, the pork steaks in vinha d'alho and the beans cooked in the oven. For dessert, try the curd cheese with pumpkin jam, rice pudding, crista cake, milk cakes, cavacas, esquecidos and bean cakes. As digestive, do not forget the juniper brandy, or a jeropiga, accompanied with roasted chestnut, in due season.
