Pampilhosa da Serra

The settlement of the Concelhio territory dates back to quite ancient times. The successive human occupations, from the Bronze Age to the Roman era, are identified through archaeological remains found along the prospects carried out in the county. Of these traces, the rock art stands out, located mainly at the headwaters of the Unhais River, and a significant number of sites composed of funerary monuments, called mamoas.

The repeated changes in the course of the history of this municipality have counted on an attentive population, of determined men and women who, with a strong spirit of collective consciousness, have made their municipality a cohesive territory with its own identity.

In this way, Pampilhosa da Serra presents, from the historical and archaeological point of view, a unique richness. Its central location , its important hydrographic network and the geological characteristics of its magnificent mountains, have made this privileged space for the passage and fixation of human populations for millennia, with special emphasis on some chronological periods.

The municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra is currently composed of eight parishes: Cabril, Dornelas, Fajão - Vidual, Janeiro de Baixo, Pampilhosa da Serra, Pessegueiro, Portela do Fojo – Machio and Unhais-o-Velho.
