Proença-a-Nova

Legend has it that the inhabitants, as they admired the moon shining in the sky, conceived the goal of achieving it and the easiest way would be to place tenements on tenements, improvising a tower. At one point a tenement would be missing to reach the moon, when someone suggested removing the tenement from the bottom and passing it up. With this displacement happened the inevitable: the tower collapsed and those present exclaimed: "there goes the corked!", having been born from here the first name of the village.

The official justification for the name Cork is in relation to the abundant production of cork and a high number of hives (also called tenements) that were once of great importance in the region. The ancient designations of Cork and Improved Village fell into disuse from the sixteenth century in favor of Proença a Nova.

Until 1623 there are no records of health services in Proença-a-Nova, other than barbers or healers. The communications were practically non-existent, allowing to affirm that, until 1879, Proença-a-Nova was isolated from the rest of the country. That year, road no. 12 was built, connecting the municipality to Sertã, Abrantes and Castelo Branco. The post office, in the phase of great expansion, also regularized, with the appointment of a courier to Sertã, in charge of making a weekly expedition.

The most dynamic neighborhood in the village was Devesa. In addition to the chapel of Espírito Santo, the main services and commercial establishments were located here. Devesa was also the place where the parties were held. Another characteristic neighborhood was Outeiro, next to the Mother Church, where people with weak economic resources lived, but with characters that are still part of the memory of the inhabitants.
