Sever do Vouga

The municipality of Sever do Vouga covers much of the Serra do Arestal, part of the Gralheira Massif, as well as the Vouga River valley, a natural heritage classified under the Natura Network.

In a rural environment reminiscent of the coast, it demonstrates well the ability of the people of the land to extract fruitful results from geo-cultural symbiosis.

The story is that when Visigoths and Suevi fought for the territory now known as Sever do Vouga, at the beginning of the 6th century and, after the victory of the first, one of its remarkable warriors - the Count of Sevéri- will have been established here.
For many years the descendant relatives of this count will have used the same title, eventually giving rise to the current toponym, together with the word Vouga, name of the river that passes through the county.

The gastronomy in Sever do Vouga is a reason for the presence of many visitors, predominantly from other regions of the country and is the brand image of the municipality, reflecting on the various restaurants and pasture houses that you can find here.  Here you can enjoy some of the famous regional dishes, with emphasis on sever-style roastve with rice in the oven, roasted kid, lamprey on rice, rojões with grelos and various fish delicacies from the river in escabeche.

In the sweets, the first regional sweet comes only in 1995 when the City Council organized a contest for the creation of the "Regional Sweet of the Municipality of Sever do Vouga", where they won the kisses of Sever. Also the gem candies and the regueifas are popular here and characteristic of pilgrimages and parties.
