Soure

The archaeological remains, especially from the Neolithic
and Roman period, allied to the natural conditions that have attracted human occupation from an early age, indicate that this space has been occupied since time immemorial.  During the Christian reconquest period, Soure assumed a role of vital strategic importance. Its castle is, until the conquest of Lisbon, a fortified square, included in the waist of military buildings of the defense of Coimbra. Given its position of connection between the castles and routes that crossed the territories of Coimbra and Montemor-o-Velho, and its proximity to the confluence of the Rivers Anços and Arunca that served as a natural moat.

In terms of geography, the municipality of Soure presents two areas with well differentiated characteristics: the Serrana area, which integrates the sub-region of Sicó, where cheese production continues to be one of the characteristic activities, along with the operation of limestone extraction units and an industrial unit of fruit roasting Dry; and the remaining municipality, more flat, dominated by the alluvial basins of the Anços, Arunca and Pranto rivers, presents a richer soil and a greater proximity to the main communication axes of the region and the country. It therefore presents a higher development index, based on a diversified framework of activities at the sectoral level.
