Vila Nova da Barquinha

The settlement of the territory that corresponds to the current municipality dates back to ancient times, namely the Paleolithic period, as can be seen by the archaeological remains found in Aldeínha. In Tancos and the parish of Atalaia, Neolithic marks are visible, while the Roman and Arab presence is also well visible in the municipality, and has in the Castle of Almourol its ex-libris. This will have been reconstructed by
Gualdim Pais, Master of the Order of the Templars, who will have understood that this territory constituted a place of great military strategic relevance.

In addition to the Castle of Almourol, the defensive waist of this area was composed of the already missing Castles of Paio de Pelle and Cardiga. The villages that make up the municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha were losing military importance and it was the Tagus River that came to have a key role in local development. Navigability and heavy river traffic originated river ports in Tancos and Barquinha.
The decrease in this trade only decreased with the arrival of the railway, which caused the decline of riverside settlements.

Castelo de Almourol
